We have a GE washer that will not agitate during the 'Cotton Regular/Fast' cycle, but will agitate during the 'Easy Care Gentle/Fast' and 'Delicate Gentle/Slow' cycles. The washer will fill, drain, and spin correctly in each of the cycles.

The belt broke approximately 4 weeks ago and we replaced the belt. The washer did agitate correctly in all cycles for approximately 1 week after replacing the belt. After determining that the washer was not agitating during a regular wash, we inspected the agitator coupler and it is not stripped. We have also replaced the timer and this did not solve the problem.

Could anyone provide any recommendations to correct this problem? Thank you in advance.

Most likely a bad motor/inverter. The way to test is to place in regular cycle agitate and check for 120vac at the blue wire and violet/white wire on the rightmost connector at the motor/inverter.

Hi Eric,

We tested the motor and are seeing 120vac if we go from a ground to the blue and also if we go from a ground to the violet/white. It still does not agitate but it is getting voltage at the motor.

Does this mean that the motor is bad?

Thank you.

Yes, it seems the motor/inverter is bad. The timer simply applies 120vac to two different terminals on the inverter plug for the four basic functions.

High speed agitate: blue and violet/white
Low speed agitate: white and violet/white
High speed spin: blue and red
Low speed spin: white and red

Since all functions except high speed agitate are working and the blue and violet/white wire are used for other functions besides high speed agitate, the wiring appears ok.

The inverter board has it's own microprocessor and firmware for controlling the motor. The timer just tells it what to do and for how long. You could try an inverter reset but not likely to help. Unplug washer for one minute, plug back in and open/close lid at least 6 times within 12 seconds.
