My washer seems to run through the cycles of filling and draining ok, but it does not agitate. I can get it to agitate when there are no clothes in it, but even a small load causes the agitator to not move.

There have been a couple times when the pump ran on the spin cycle, but the agitator didn't spin until I opened and closed the lid, but I'm wondering if this is a different issue than the main one above.

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

It looks like there are two separate problems.

In order to diagnose the first problem you may want to check the motor drive coupling. Click on the part number bellow to watch the repair video.

The second problem most likely caused by a bad timer.

It is supposed to initially drain without spinning. After draining for a minute or two it will switch to drain and spin. This is accomplished by pausing the motor which is what you are doing when you open/close the lid. If you don't notice a pause of the motor after draining, then it could be the timer as Gene mentioned. It could very well be that a failing coupler is causing both problems.

Awesome. I'll try the coupling first and see what happens from there, thank you!

The old coupling looked ok, but I replaced it anyway. I'm sorry to say that the washer still does not agitate with a load of clothes.

Is it the lower half of the agitator that isn't working or the upper half? Does it spin ok? If it's just that the upper agitator isn't working, it probably just needs a new set of dogs. With the machine off, you should only be able to rotate the upper agitator in the clockwise direction. If you can freely rotate in both directions with the lower agitator fixed, the teeth on the dogs are probably stripped.

Yes, It spins ok, it just doesn't agitate. The agitator moves freely in both directions when it is off. I will try the dogs now.

Agitators in laundry equipment can be super finicky about when they decide to work. I would try the mentioned ideas and if not maybe call in a repair person that can diagnose the problem and recommend a solution…good luck!
