Default Whirlpool Estate Washer won't Spin
Model Number: ETW4400SQO   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

My washing machine stopped spinning full loads. It would spin with one or two items.
We repaired the clutch...and the machine worked great...for about one day(a very full day of laundry!) After, almost catching up on all the laundry that had backed up, the machine stopped spinning.(again ).
It agitates and washes the clothes, drains out fine. It simply does not spin the clothes dry. Today when I checked under the machine, I noticed a powdery ash on the floor.
Can anyone diagnose my problem?

Where did you get the clutch from?

It's junk. I always try to caution people to not buy appliance parts from Amazon or e bay. It's not a genuine Whirlpool FSP part. That's why it's only $8.95 This happened recently to another DIY'er on this forum and when he got the "real" part, he could clearly see/feel the difference. This happens a lot, you get what you pay for.

I realize you need to make a profit from selling parts. I would be thrilled to buy your excellent parts. However, I also know that the part that I took out of my washer was of the exact same quality and #( Whirlpool 285785 Clutch Assembly) as the part that I replaced.

You are not helping me in any way by telling me that I bought junk. I would have loved to pay only $8.95.

I need to fix my washing machine...I don't need a review or an editorial on where I bought it from.

The reason I asked where you bought it from was because lots of DIY'ers have purchased the $8.95 clutch from Amazon and found out that they only last about 2-3 loads before they fail. I'm not trying to drum up business for Appliancepartspros. I'm trying to help you fix your washer. If your clutch came in a sealed bag with the Whirlpool FSP label on it, then you got a genuine Whirlpool part. If that is the case, I can continue to try and help you if you like.

The part had the same exact #. I cannot remember if the bag said Whirlpool or not. The bag was definitely sealed. However, the part that we put in does not look the same as the part you sell. It did look like the part which we removed(had it been new).
There is a great deal of a dusty, black and white, residue all over the new clutch.
Should we replace the clutch again? and should we also replace the coupler?

Yes, I would replace the clutch. I looked up the clutch at Seneca River Trading and see it there for $8.25, it is not a genuine Whirlpool part. The pads on those clutch bands wear out within just a few loads. That is probably what is producing the dust you are seeing. As far as the coupler, as long as none of the plastic fingers are broken and the holes in the rubber isolator are intact, I wouldn't worry about it. Before you put the gearcase back in, grab the brake cam driver and rotate it by hand CCW while pushing to make sure the basket drive and brakes are fully up into the brake hub. It should be fairly easy to rotate the basket drive this way. If it seems really tight make sure the brakes are releasing (not sticking). If they are releasing but it still seems tight, there may be clothing stuck between the tubs.

I just replaced the clutch from Seneca River Trading with a new part...same number...$30.00 more. The new part weighed about three times as much as the Seneca part. The dust around the clutch was unbelievable!
I'm sorry that I got nasty when you told me that the junk I bought was junk.
You were right, it was.
Thank you for your help,
AnaB

No problem, happy to help out, and you still saved a lot of money by doing it yourself and got more experience on servicing your washer.
