Has anybody else had experience with a tub so high that it contacts the top panel of the washer?

The tub in my washer is now touching the underside of the top panel of the washer; causing the washer to trip off during spin cycle. It looks like if I shim the front of the top panel upward by about a quarter of an inch, the tub will clear the underside of the top panel during spin cycles.

I know that the excessive height of the tub is at least partly a direct result of my replacing the damper pads this week. At the time of the repair, I did not think I was using too much adhesive (RTV) in attaching the replacement damper pads. I used high temp RTV silicone adhesive, on the recommendation of the actual repair man at my local appliance repair parts store (instead of the expensive Maytag branded adhesive). I did let the RTV cure for 36-hr before I re-assembled the washer.

Even so, please note that:

The rubber seal that should be between the top panel of the washer and the tub has been absent the entire time I've owned and used the washer - that is for at least the last six years. I can see fastener locations where apparently a rubber seal used to be attached there long ago. (The absence of a seal has never caused any problem.) Even with no rubber seal present, before I replaced the damper pads the tub was already almost in contact with the top panel - with no room whatsoever for a rubber seal between the top panel and the tub.

This is one of the most unusual problems I have come across. I would say the problem was probably created during the repair you did, but I cannot say what to do to fix it.

I know it is not an elegant solution, but if putting shins or spacers in to raise the top panel enough to stop the contact works, then do it. This is an older model and you have more than received your money's worth, so whatever works, go for it.

Many thanks for your encouragement!

The washing machine is now running fine with about 1/4" of washers as shims/spacers between the side panels and the front edge of the top panel.

Unfortunately, as a result of raising up the top panel, the holes for the two screws for securing the front panel near the bases of the side panels don't line up now - and consequently the front panel is hanging (and hinging) from the spring clips at its top edge.

Also, it seems strange to me that there is room whatsoever for a rubber seal between the tub and the top panel (and there never has been since I acquired the washing machine, second hand).

Is it feasible that some other repair done before I acquired the washing machine resulted in a higher position of the tub, or even that the original tub was replaced with a slightly taller one, or something else like that?

I don't know if something was wrong before, but since you have it working I would do whatever you need to secure the front panel (or even run it without the front panel (what the heck!), just so long as it works you are ahead of the game.
