It had mostly completed the wash cycle on a normal load when it began a stripped-gear noise. My wife was nearby and shut it down, fetched me and repeated the noise.

It is now face-down on a towel in my shop with the hoses, wires and three fastening bolts disconnected/removed. I was able to pull it away from the tub about an inch, but no more.

What's the secret? How do I remove the motor/pump/gearbox assembly?

Which part am I likely to find as the culprit?

You have to remove the agitator first, but you might not have to remove the whole thing. It might just be the drive coupler between motor and gearcase. You only have to remove the pump and motor to get to that. Better to just remove the cabinet for this than lay the machine down. It's likely to leak gearcase oil out of the vent hole if you leave it laying down for a long period of time.
