Default GE Washer Tub Spins During Was Cycle, No Aggitation
Model Number: WCXR1070T8WW   Brand: GE   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

I'm helping a friend with her GE washer. The machine's agitator doesn't rotate during the wash cycle, but the tub spins. I pulled the agitator and didn't see any striped splines. From everything I read online, this points towards a bad transmission. Before I spend the money on a new one, I thought I would ask here.
I'm pretty mechanically savvy (I work on Volvos for a living), but I'm a little out of my element working on this machine.
Thanks in advance for any help offered!

Hi.

Check if the clutch is turning in agitation and belt is not slipping on the transmission pulley.
If everything looks OK - replace the transmission.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Suspension, Pump & Drive Components parts for GE WCXR1070T8WW - AppliancePartsPros.com

Post the results.

Simon.

I'm not sure exactly how to see if the clutch is turning during the agitation cycle. I'll check the belt. How can I check it?

I assume you mean to observe if the clutch is turning during the wash cycle as the agitator does not agitate.

When you say "turning in agitation", do you mean the transmission spinning around while the tub spins during the wash cycle?

Thanks.

You can't actually see the clutch, it's inside the motor pulley. The motor shaft protrudes below the pulley and there is a clip on the bottom of it. If the clip is spinning but the pulley is not, then the clutch is slipping. Rotate the motor pulley CCW (looking from below) by hand while someone observes the agitator. If it's not moving, pull the agitator and agitator coupling and observe the agitator shaft directly to see if it's moving back and forth.

Wouldn't the fact that the tub is spinning during the wash cycle suggest that the clutch is transmitting power from the motor to the drive belt?

I got the agitator off, but can you tell me how to remove the agitator coupler? It appears that it must just pop off, but I didn't want to force it. I removed the 7/16" bolt on top, but it seems to be pressed on.

I'll go through the procedure you outlined in the AM and post my results. Thanks for all of the help!

Yes, but something in the transmission could be locked up preventing the pulley from turning in agitate mode. In spin, the motor turns the main pulley in a direction that causes the brake to release and the whole transmission rotates to rotate the basket. In agitation mode, the motor turns in the opposite direction, the brake remains engaged preventing the the transmission housing from rotating and just the input shaft of the transmission rotates which drives the internal gears that in turn drive the agitate output shaft. It's not likely that the transmission is jammed causing the clutch to slip. More likely, either the agitator coupling is stripped or the transmission is bad. Once the bolt is removed, the agitator coupler is just pulled straight up. This is an old washer, so it may be stuck on there pretty good which means it's probably not stripped splines in the coupler. The splines are in the coupler, not the agitator. There is a tech sheet tucked inside the control panel that has a wiring diagram and instructions on how to disassemble the washer and replace the transmission. If the transmission is bad, your going to need a spanner wrench to get the tub nut off.

Eric

It's beginning to sound more and more like the transmission is the problem, specifically the brake. From what I can tell, a new transmission is about $200. I wonder if she wouldn't be better off putting that towards a new washer as this one isn't new and was used when she bought it. I'll check in the AM and post my results.
Thanks very much!
