Several years ago my washer quit agitating. A simple question to your company gave me the solution to my problem; dogs. I have previously ordered dog replacement kits as well as just the dogs. On all previous times, the replacement has worked. However this time I replaced the dogs only-didn't work, then replaced with entire kit, still doesn't work. When both were installed, the auger only turned clockwise and caught very well on a counterclockwise attempt. However when the auger is attached to the agitator and the machine is turned on, it still just turns in a clockwise motion with no back and forth agitation. Any suggestions? The large rubber gasket that goes on the agitator, what is the correct placement for it, could that be the problem?

Does the transmission shaft (I think you call it "auger") turns back and forth when washer agitates?
If it's turns only CW you need to replace the transmission.

According to the instruction sheet included with the dog replacement kit, the "auger" is the top (removable) portion of the agitator. The auger has to be removed before the dogs can be installed. The instructions state that after inserting new dogs, the auger/agitator should only turn clockwise when manually tested, and it does. This means it is installed properly. This is also what fixed it on previous occasions when I replaced dogs and it fixed it.

However this time, when the washer is turned on to a normal wash, the auger/agitator still goes round and round and only agitates if you place pressure on top with your hand. That is why I think the large black band/washer(?) may be in the wrong location. It was included in the kit, but the instruction sheet does not state the proper placement of it.

I don't think it is the transmission since it will agitate properly as long as I have my hand on top applying pressure.

Could there be another part that I need or could it just be the placement of the large black washer/band?

Sounds to me like it's working like it's supposed to. Only the lower agitator section goes back and forth. The upper agitator is only driven in one direction.

No because the agitator as a whole is suppose to go back and forth, it isn't. It goes in a continuous clockwise motion.

When I first contacted with this question several years ago I found out it was worn out dogs. I replaced them then and it began the correct agitation. Fast forward to now....it started going round and round again so I order a new package of dogs as well as an entire kit. But when installed this time, it didn't go to agitation. That's what makes me question the large band/washer placement, it is placed on the lower portion of the agitator but the instructions don't specify where. Dogs have fixed it in the past but just not this time.

No, it's not. Only the lower part is driven back and forth. The upper part is only driven in one direction. That is the purpose of the dogs. The agitator cam inside the upper agitator is driven by the lower agitator. In one direction, the dogs are thrown outward, engage the upper agitator and force it to rotate. When the lower agitator rotates in the opposite direction, the dogs do not engage and the upper agitator is free of any "driven" direction.

Do you know the proper placement of the large black band/washer that came in the dog installation kit. It is not mentioned on the instruction sheet but is with the kit. Where does it actually go?

It is a replacement o-ring for the inner agitator cap, the one you removed to get to the agitator bolt.

I have just taken my agitator apart again. For anyone following this thread or referencing it in the future, the 3 inch "o-ring" is placed at the first groove on the large agitator just below where the thrust washer is placed. Looking at the instruction sheet, the magnified circle for the agitator base tabs is where you will slip the o-ring on and place/rest it on the first mark/hump/not smooth place you come to. Then carefully replace the auger so as not to move the o-ring from where it is placed. I had it much lower which was more to the bottom of the auger and it allowed the auger to go round and round. The 0-ring eliminates the slack between the auger and agitator. Now my washer is agitating back and forth on both sections as it did when it was new. Finally an agitation the way it is suppose to be.
