My washer was not spinning at random loads. replaced the clutch and also replaced balance spring at same time. Now when the drum is empty during spin cycle and the lid is opened brakes activate. When spinning with a load of clothes and lid is opened the drum will spin to a stop with no braking effect. Did I screw something up with the repair. It agitates, drains and spins properly.

Try reinstalling the clutch. The brakes may not be releasing due to a problem there.

That's what I did and found the brakes halfway out of their "drum". reseated the brakes and put it all back together. looks fine now. Need to test a few loads before I give it the thumbs up.

I was thinking that may be the problem. Any time you remove the gearcase, before re-installing, you need to make sure the basket drive is fully seated. The act of pulling the gearcase can pull the basket drive down a tad. It can't go too far because the basket is still attached. The brake assembly is mounted to the bottom of the drive tube. You just rotate CCW on the brake cam while pushing in to ensure the drive is all the way in.
