Question about Door Switch on Washer

I am pretty sure that I know what my problem is from looking on other posts here, I was just looking for a bit of an explanation if somebody can provide it. I have a problem with the washer were it will not go into high spin. It seemed to work when the washer was empty but not with clothes in it. I pulled the door latch off and checked the resistance on the latch and it read 966ohms. I went to the local parts store to pick up a new one but they told me that i couldn't return it if it didn't fix the problem. While I was there I checked the resistance on the new motor and it was 1640ohms. This is most likely the problem. I am just wondering how the door latch affects the machine going into high spin? Is there any other checks I can do to confirm that the speed controller and motor are ok? I did notice that I can return the door latch if I buy it here, so that will be good I just want to make sure I am replacing the right part before i order it. Any information you can provide would be a big help.
