Problem started about a week ago with the main drive belt squealing at the beginning of the wash cycle (when it should be agitating). Also squealed in the rinse cycle when it should be agitating. Took the belts off. cleaned them and the pulleys. The washer would still not agitate normally and the belt would squeal UNLESS i put pressure on the motor slide. once it started it would generally finish the cycle, but not consistently, so i bought a new drive belt. The washer would still not agitate normally and the belt would squeal UNLESS i put pressure on the motor slide, so i lubricated the motor slide. The washer would still not agitate normally and the belt would squeal UNLESS i put pressure on the motor slide. Went and talked to the parts supply house manager to buy the motor slide repair kit and new springs, which i thought was the problem. He would not sell me the springs and said i should check the inner tub to see if it spins freely. If not he said the tub bearing was likely seizing up. The tub would not spin freely and i bought the tub bearing kit 6-2095720) and mounting stem and boot seal kit (part 6-2040130). I cut off the old mounting stem and after removing the tub bearing, upon inspection it did not look bad, so i became suspicious it was not the problem. Nonetheless I installed the new parts and put everything back together.
Now the machine will not agitate period. When i put pressure on the motor slide, it overloads and kicks out. The machine still spins fines and pumps out the water. The tub spins easier by hand than it did before (with effort) but certainly does not spin freely like the new machine i looked at today.
Note: I did not buy a spanner wrench. I hand tightened the mounting stem and then tapped it few times with a hammer and a punch. Same with the inner tub nut. I don't think i overtightened them.
I did the transmission test and the tub rotates going clockwise after 1/2- 3/4 turn. when i back the pulley 1/4 turn counterclockwise, the agitator doesn't really move back and forth, but i can move the transmission (orbital) hub back and forth with effort. I guess i'm not exactly sure how to test the transmission, but the machine did agitate before the repairs with slight pressure on the motor slide.
This leads me to the brake/clutch assembly as the suspect problem. I don't have the brake tool and note that the spring is under 200 lbs of tension.
I'm not sure about undertaking this repair or if it the problem is with the transmission or something else I did, like over-torque the mounting stem or inner tub nuts.
Thanks

I took the rubber cup off. there was grease in the cup and some had migrated out onto the center of the pulley. not sure which is the dog and which is the cufflink. Part no. 2-11089 is there. I can see where it has splines on the transmission shaft. Not sure how to check the clutch mechanism. when i rotate it clockwise, it looks like the shaft raises up a bit and then it rotates the drum like it's supposed to i believe. when i rotate it counterclockwise the part no. 2-11089 engages the stop on the pulley and it will rotate with some effort. it does not appear to agitate. i can manually agitate the orbital transmission with effort, but i don't think that's meaningful.
thanks.

Hi.

It sounds like the bad transmission. Here are the breakdown diagrams and 05-Orbital Transmission parts for Maytag A412 - AppliancePartsPros.com

The new transmission most likely will come with the seal kit.

Post the results.

Simon.
