Our 20+yr old washer is making a loud roar, almost like a plane is landing or something! Balance has been checked & seems to be alright. Since it's such an old machine is this worth repairing?

Such repair can be pretty expensive. So your decision should be based on condition of the washer.

Look under your machine, is there water (leaking center shaft bearing) or a reddish or brown oily material (transmission seal leak) ?

If it is just water, and based on noise, the likely problem is the main bearing for the driveshaft. Some models it is a 30minute fix, some it is a 3hour fix. Most independent shops, if you call them and ask what they would charge to replace the center bearing and drive shaft (it is usually a kit) they will tell you an estimate.

If there is brown or reddish oil, then your transmission is lost as well.

The good news is you have 20 years of value in the machine. THe bad news is new machines won't last 20 years.
