Model Number: whdsr315daww Brand: GE Age: 5 - 10 years
For the last few weeks I've been having trouble with knob behind the on/off knob turning to set the settings takes all my fingers to turn it. I was washing a load and the water kept coming in and flooded out.. Had to shut off water lines to stop it.. Is it the knob or timer??

If it's very difficult to turn the timer knob, then you may very well have a bad timer but the flooding problem is most likely due to a problem with the water level control. Either the air dome/hose on the side of the outer tub is clogged, the hose fittings are loose or the pressure switch behind the control panel is bad.

Thank you for your help.. Looks like I'll be buying a new washer now ! I have problems with knobs or timers more often then not.. They should make the knob gears with metal not plastic.. Just something the companies do to sell more washers and part too !

Your washer is about 8 years old and is of very simple design. If it's in good shape overall, other than the problems your having, you are far better off getting it repaired than buying a new one even if the cost is nearly as much as a new one. The new washer designs use very little water, are cheaply made, electronically controlled, and seem to be having high failure rates after very little use. In all likelyhood, all you need is to have the air dome cleaned and timer knob replaced.

On these GE models the plastic ridges on the timer knob wear down. Here is the part
Part number: AP2044505 To take the knob off, use needle nose pliers to pull the clip behind the knob. The knob will then come off. Then check the hose to the water level switch and the switch itself
