Loud metallic start to spin cycle.
Model Number: MAVT634WW Brand: Maytag Age: 5 - 10 years
The spin cycle starts with a loud metallic noise that fades away when the tub picks up speed. The clothing is coming out quite well wrung. I replaced the water pump about 10 months ago, which seemed to eliminate the noise then. But it has returned, a raspy sort of sound. Today I pulled and examined the pump (looks fine) and checked the in and out hoses for objects: nothing. Its back together again, spinning better than usual, and starting out with that sound. Please tell me that its not the transmission! I considered running the washer with the front panel removed to detect where the sound is coming from. The noise seems to be coincident with water being pumped out, then dies out when the water is gone, as the spin cycle continues smoothly on. The pump is always in motion when the machine is running, so I'm thinking that there is maybe a solenoid valve that opens to let the pump do its thing, and that valve might be chattering. Typically, that would be due to a low voltage condition, but maybe not. I am out of guesses, and would appreciate any help! I thank you in advance for any suggestions.
