Model Number: WBXR2060V1WW Brand: GE Age: 1 - 5 years
GE Top loading washer WBXR2060V1WW, fills with water, DOES NOT AGITATE, you can hear the motor humming, will drain the tub and go through the spin cycle. Any ideas? So seems to do everything OK except agitate.

Check under the agitator for clothing jamming it up. To remove agitator, place a strap under it near to center as possible and yank it upwards. If nothing there, remove the front panel by inserting putty knife into top groove of panel in line with the lid opening on each side to release the clips, tilt outward and lift away from cabinet. Rotate motor pulley CCW (looking from bottom) by hand. This should turn the large pulley which turns the transmission input shaft for agitate. If it turns, have someone observe the lower agitator to see if it goes back and forth while you are turning the pulley. Report back.

Ok, checked and that seems OK. I ran it again this morning and here is a new development: The Tub Filled with water and it went into clean cycle. The Machine did agitate for about 30 seconds and then stopped. It was accompanied by the smell of burning wire. The smell was there when it agitated and went away when it stopped. I then moved it to spin cycle, the tub drained and it started spin cycle but once again only for about 15 seconds and it came to a sudden stop. No smell during spin cycle. I un plugged and checked for obvious burned wires and found none. I am starting to think Craigs List for a new used one, what are your thoughts? Chad |

Could be the timer, motor, bad connections. Only way to know for sure is to troubleshoot live circuits with multimeter, not recommended for inexperienced homeowner. You can try the shotgun approach of just parts replacement, or go for another washer.
