Model Number: maytag mav8557aww Brand: Maytag Age: 5 - 10 years
So the other day the washer filled with water but would not start the wash cycle. There is a buzzing/vibration noise coming from where the water fills the tub. There was a hot electrical smell too. I could not get the spin cycle to start to drian it so I had to do that by hand... I got the washer outside and inspected the thrust bearing which checked out to be ok. I replaced that about 3 years ago. I disconnected the belt and tested the motor in spin cycle and the motor works. Connected the belt again and the motor spins the tub in spin cycle. I can't get the agitator to move with the timer. I can spin the thrust bearing by hand and it moves. Does the motor have a reverse for the agitator to work? How can I test the agitator??? Does the washer have to have water in the tub to test? Thanks in advance for your help.

In order to agitate the motor has to move in the opposite direction. Does it?
If it does not, disconnect the Gray and Yellow wires from the water level (pressure) switch and connect them each to other. Turn the timer to the wash cycle. If the motor will start to run, replace the water level switch. If it would not, replace the motor. - The water level switch Part number: 22004200 - The motor Part number: 21001950 Here are the breakdown diagrams and Parts for Maytag MAV8557AWW Washer - AppliancePartsPros.com Gene.

Ok so I put everything back together and ran a mini test load with no clothes and the washer is working... Now I notice that the water still fills up with water slowly in wash cycle. Is there a shut off value that go bad? I am also babying the washer now keeping an eye on it. I don't want it to cause a fire.

If water keeps coming in very slow then the problem is a bad water inlet valve which did not close completely.
If water keeps coming in with relatively good pressure then the problem can be a bad water level switch too. - The water inlet valve Part number: 22004333 Gene.
