Model Number: LSQ8243HQ Brand: Whirlpool Age: More than 10 years
My whirlpool washer makes a loud ratcheting sound when agitating. I have changed the 4 dogs inside the agitator, but it still makes the sound sometimes. The strange thing is I can stop the sound by grabbing the agitator and pulling up on it. It will be quiet for a while or for the rest of that cycle. But the sound will still come back, so I pull up on the agitator again. What else do I need to change?

The splines up inside the bottom of the agitator may be stripping out. They mate with the splines of the gearcase agitator shaft. Grab the bottom fins of the agitator and see if you can rotate to see if it is slipping.

I checked further, when it makes the ratcheting sound it is mechanical. I watched inside the agitator, the dogs are engaging. When the noise starts the steel agitator shaft rotates counter clockwise. It does not alternate rotation direction. And when in spin mode it seems to unbalance easily, based on the sounds it makes, but the basket does not rotate out of center more than 3/4". Admittedly I may not have reassembled correctly and that could cause the out of balance problem.
Any ides. |
