I have looked around at previous posts and don't seem to find anything similar. This site is very helpful. Thanks. I have a kenmore washing machine that has been getting a little loud at the start of the agitation cycle for a couple of weeks. Last night however it make loud clicking/beating sound during the agitation cycle and there was the smell of burning petroleum products. It is able to go through a complete spin cycle without noise or odor.

Following suggestions in other posts I took off the motor and am able to spin the motor both clockwise and counter clockwise freely. Also able to spin the transmission both ways - a little more resistance on counterclockwise but seems appropriate for the fact that I was getting the drum to spin. Where is the next logical step. I have not pulled the trany or inspected the brakes/clutch yet.

Turning the gearcase input shaft counterclockwise is the direction for agitation, not spin. The clutch and brake have nothing to do with agitation other than the brake keeping the basket from turning during agitation. Make sure there is nothing jammed under the agitator. If it's clear, try agitate with the drain pump removed. Just release the clips, pull it off and move it aside, don't have to disconnect the hoses. It's possible there is something in there that only jams in agitation direction.

So, i have pulled of the agitator and don't see anything there, I then disconnected the pump and the same nose is being made. now it is making noise during both the start of the agitate and all through the spin cycle. i had an old compatible motor and put it in. there was no noise but the motor proceeded burn up and die. still able to to rotate the transmission clockwise with minimal difficulty and counterclockwise with ease where would you suggest next?
