I think we need some more information.

1. Does the machine fail to spin after the wash and rinse cycles?

2. Does the machine drain properly?

3. Does the timer continue to move even though the machine is not spinning?

4. Can you tell if the motor is running during the spin cycle?

Let us know, and please post a complete model number so we know which washer we are working with.

Ok...im gonna try my best to answer all these questions...my washer is currently not together cause my husband was just gonna replace the clutch in hopes that would fix it.

I know for sure that it didnt spin after the rinse cycle...it was making a louder noise than normal in both cycles before it quit working. It was draining properly as far as i could tell. I am pretty sure the timer kept moving and the motor sounded as if the spin cycle was working, though i opened the lid and saw that the drum wasnt turning but the agitator was going like crazy during the spin cycle...(someone told me that some kind of plate broke in the transmission causing this)..I'm at my wits end with this matter. I just bought this washer a little over a year ago but failed to buy the extended warrentee..I could just kick myself!!! I'm almost sure this is gonna cost way more than i can manage, so I'm guessing it's back to the laundrymat for me. The model number is WTW5540SQ0...I sure hope you have good news the next time i hear from you:(

Well, kinda good news.

The fact that the agitator is moving during the spin cycle and the type of noise you were having is almost conclusive proof that your transmission has failed. You should of course, replace the clutch and see if that fixes it since you started that repair, but it probably will not.

The good news is since your husband knows how to tear it down to get to the clutch, the same process is used to replace the transmission. The kinda bad news is the cost of the transmission. Not excessive, but not inexpensive either. Here is the part.

Part number: AP3096209
Part number: AP3096209

If the machine is just out of warranty I would contact Whirlpool and see if they will send you a new transmission at now cost, which you or your husband can install. The transmission on these machines is pretty sturdy and should last a long time, not slightly more than a year.

Good luck.
