Washer fills with water, then instead of agitating it goes directly into spin cycle. Now this does not happen all the time, maybe once a week. So, something is in the process of breaking. How do I figure out which timer or switch to replace. One cost $85 and the others around $10.

The timer controls the direction of the motor, one direction for agitate, the other for spin. This suggests the timer is the problem but I would check out the wiring for some type of short. This is very unusual, and I am not certain how it is happening, but if it is happening it is likely frayed/shorted wiring or the timer.
