Towards the end of the rinse cycle the machine began making a great deal of noise, so my wife shut it off and called me. I found that the noise occurred as it was trying to agitate (or spin?). I put it on the gentle cycle and it did agitate, but quite noisily. It never seemed to spin, but I didn't try very long because of the noise. After removing the clothes, I advanced it to drain and was able to get it to drain, although even that process sounded noisier than usual. Please advise.

Take off the cabinet, (see site for how to do it, your screws may be under a trim piece or at the back) and by pass the lid switch. Operate the machine and see if you can tell exactly where the noise is coming from. Kenmore top loader blues (SublimeMasterJW's Appliance Advice)This is what we would do if we had your machine in front of us, its about the only way to diagnose noises.
