Hello all!! Newcomer to the forum so go easy on me!! LOL!! Try to make my question short but with enough detail to give you what you need!! Older washing machine and about a year ago started making a whining noise while spin cycling, figured I had a main bearing going bad so I bought a new main bearing kit thats just been in the garage waiting for the explosion!! LOL!! Well that day came recently but what I heard was washer moter trying to turn the belt but the noise was a loud thump thump thump noise!! I have it all apart and the main bearing is NOT in great shape but still turns and is not seized. Now the real question, should the transmission shaft spin back and forth fairly freely with it removed from the motor, brake and outer tub assembly?? Does it sound like that's what seized, not the bearing?? Think I know the answer, but just want o bounce this off the experts!

Any thoughts or inputs would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Steve29

I think you have identified the problem which is likely a bad transmission. Given the age of the machine I think you should try to return your bearing kit and replace the machine with a basic top loader. You will be out more money in the short term but much happier in the long run.
