Bobbi: I have a Roper Whirlpool Washer model #RTW4440VQ1
Bobbi: I have a question about a problem
Bobbi: I put a load of clothes in and in the very beginning wash stage a bed sheet became wrapped around the agitator
Bobbi: it began to make a loud noise
Bobbi: almost like when the tub gets off balance
Bobbi: I stopped the machine removed the clothes and it continued to make the noise once turned back on
Bobbi: I spun the water out and it did not make the noise, I filled it back up and tried again and the same noise continued
Bobbi: I took the top off the agitator, took the base of the agitator out and turned it on, and no noise
Bobbi: I put the bottom of the agitator back in and the noise resumed
Bobbi: any ideas?
Bobbi: the gear and pinion has been suggested, I am going to tear the machine apart to see if I can see anything damaged but thought I would ask before I started if there was anything in particular I should check first

Hi.

Most likely it's the transmission issue. Recommend to replace the hole transmission.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Gearcase parts for Roper RTW4440VQ1 - AppliancePartsPros.com

When I entered my last post I didn't know that my agitator is only twisting one way and causing the clothes to get twisted around the agitator. I originally thought a sheet being twisted around the agitator caused the problem but I now know that the agitator isn't agitating correctly, it is twisting in only one direction and causing everything to get jumbled up.

Hi.

If the lower portion of the agitator turns only in one direction that's bad transmission.

Simon.
