Model Number: MAV6257 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 5 - 10 years
I have a Maytag MAV6257 washer that began acting up a few weeks ago. Its first problem was that it began agitating immediately (while it was filing with water.) It did this on the white and color setting, but not on the delicate setting. However, on all settings it began filling with water while spinning. In other words, it seems to agitate while filing (except while on the delicate cycle) and fill while spinning (always).
I first thought it was the timer, because I could press the timer knob in slightly (white and color settings) and it would stop agitating while filing. It would make a bussing sound exactly like it does on delicate. When I did this, however, I would smell burning wires, but could see nothing obvious. Note: I’ve tested the water level switch and it seems to be working properly (even though it does not affect the spin cycle). I tested by removing the tube from the switch and blowing into it; it’s not blocked. In addition, I’ve changed the level switch while running and the water stops at the appropriate level. I’ve even gone so far as to wash the tub out with vinegar. Last night, the washer started to make a horrible banging sound when washing and the agitator/auger was not moving. I’ve checked the obvious, but wonder if the timer could also be affecting this; i.e. a short, maybe the timer is engaging/releasing the brake, or some other event that causes the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ads By Google Related Models |

David,
What is the serial number of the washer? The model number you posted is incomplete. Gene.

Gene,
Thank your for your response. The entire model # is MAV6257AWW, The SN is not legible. A bit more info. I pulled the water level switch to inspect and found that terminal 16 is loose and the plastic clip on the leading wire was cracked, but I may have done this trying to remove it as it was seemingly stuck to the terminal. Obviously this is not good, but the part ohmmed out correctly. Even if I do go ahead and replace this, how does this part affect the agitation problem and the filling while spinning problem? Again, thanks. |
