My washer (and dryer) from 1974. Previous problems have been repaired through the years. Worked fine. Last couple of months hear a loud clang / grinding sound during agitation. Still works fine otherwise. Spins and drains fine...no other noises. Suggestions please.

It is almost impossible for us to diagnose a noise problem like you have from afar. We really need to be there to hear it and hear the type and hear where it is coming from.

I imagine you have a strong attachment to the machine having had it for over 35 years, but your machine in dog years is about 32 years old, in human years it is 147 years old. I would celebrate your good fortune with this machine by finally letting it retire and replacing it with a nice new basic top loader.

Good luck, sorry not to be of more help.
