We have a Kenmore 417.44142400 front loader washer that has began making a loud banging noise during the spin cycle. Other than that, everything else works fine. I'm hoping its a simple spring problem. Can I check the springs from just removing the bottom service panel from the front of the unit? I can also remove the screws in the back and take off the rear panel and check from there too. I saw in another thread where they said to remove the top as well, but our dryer is on top and I was hoping that I wouldn't have to remove the big dryer by myself. So my main questions is if it's possible to just check for spring failure without removing the top cover.

Thanks for any advice.

I am working from memory here but I beleive it is possible to take off the back without taking off the top. Taking off the top does give you a better look at the machine, but for your purposes is probably not necessary.
