2 months ago I replaced the direct drive coupler. All was good.
1 month ago it wouldn't agitate. Top agitator mover was free-wheeling. I replaced the dog ears and all was good.
2 days later it stopped agitating again. This time though the bottom agitator doesn't go clockwise. It will spin counter-clockwise, pause with loud clicking, and then spin counter-clockwise again. Won't agitate back clockwise.
I pulled the motor and transmission. Clutch and brakes look okay (untrained eye).
The spin/drive tube didn't look like the tabs were stripped.
I figured it must be in the transmission. I pulled the transmission cover off.
When I turn the drive coupler clockwise, the clutch assembly will turn. It doesn't turn when the coupler is turned counter-clockwise. The driveshaft doesn't turn at all. The cam gears below seem to be working properly.
Any ideas?
Also, can I use regular auto gear oil to refill the transmission ?

video of agitation here on youtube:

I suspect the transmission has failed, and that if you want to continue to use the machine you should replace it.

I would also check out prices on basic top loaders, you may find that a new one is the better solution, the cost would be higher but you would have a new machine with a 1 year warranty.

One test I was told by local repair guy was to spin the coupler clockwise and the spindle should agitate. When you spin the coupler counter-clockwise, the spindle should not move. If it agitates both ways or is very stiff to spin the coupler, need a new transmission. Part can be bought for $200, fairly easy to replace.
