My Whirlpool top load (direct drive) will not spin the bowl or agitate. The problem began with the bowl on spinning every once in a while then progressed to not agitating. Based on the awesome videos this site provides, I found at the coupler is working fine and I can see the clutch housing spinning but the drive shaft does not spin for agitate or spin. I am thinking I need to replace the clutch but is there a way to check for sure? What else should I check before ordering the clutch to ensure this is the problem?
Thanks for the help and the great site!

If it is not agitating the clutch is not the problem. I think the problem is the coupling and unless you took the motor off and inspected it then I think you should do so.
The videos will show you how to do this.

I would remove the pump and motor. Turn the tranny coupler clockwise till spin engages. If very hard to turn, you have sticking brake shoes and probably a bad clutch.

Thanks for the help and the great site! Sounds like the coupler is broken near the shaft looks good on the outside but broken on the inside pull the motor and tranny out as one unit and then split them outside the unit. you don't even need to take the shell off the washer just lay it on its back........ to check the clutch .... once the unit is out hold the clutch cup firmly and try to spin the clutch band with your free hand if it slides it needs to be replaced.

The clutch usually wears out because the brake shoes are dragging. You will need to take the outer cover off, the agitator also, and loosen the spanner nut on the spin basket. Just follow the info in my article "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes" I never lay the washer on it's back, takes more work get the spin basket back in place.
