My washer frequently stops during the spin cycle, I believe because of a bad lid switch. Recently I used to have to press down on the lid when starting a load to get the agitation to begin. Then it began to stop during the spin cycle, more so if the contents were out of balance and the washer would vibrate. Now it takes a good pounding on the lid to get it to continue during the agitation and spin cycles, obviously not good for the machine. Because the problem began with the initial agitation cycle not starting until I pressed on the lid, I think there is a problem with the lid switch. Supposedly it is an easy part to replace. I just can not figure out how to open top.

The reason you are having trouble taking off the top is that the top does not come off. Open up the console and flip it back, disconnect the lid switch and take out the bronze looking clips that hold the entire cabinet on. The cabinet will now pull forward and you can get to the lid switch to change it out.
