washer starts cycle, but after a few min. it stops. Sometimes it will start again after it cools. It smells hot and makes alot of noise

Sounds like the motor is over heating and cutting off on the safety switch. Remove the water pump and check to see if something is clogging it.

You probably have bad bearings in the motor, just check.
