the waher works fine until it has to go to a spin cycle. during the spin cycle it will pump water out but the agitator remains engaged so it doesn't spin the tub.

You have a busted solenoid plunger that activates the tranny slide bar.

would that require pulling the motor and the transmission to replace? and is it a part I can buy.

Flop the washer on it's face, remove the access panel, and turn the tranny pulley and belt while holding the solenoid plunger ( the one nearest the tranny spindle) down. You will probably find it will not move the slide bar and you have a busted pin in the plunger. If ok, and the agitator stopps agitating, you have busted wires to that solenoid.

It is a direct drive system so there are no pulleys or belts.

Remove the outer cabinet, the pump and motor. Turn the tranny coupler clockwise and see if the agitator still moves back and forth. If so=new tranny time.
