I have a Roper direct drive machine. The agitator stopped spinning sometimes it will spin but very weakly and I can stop it with my hand. I smelled rubber burning when the problem initially happened. Everything is spinning like it should except the agitator shaft. I have the gear box apart and I cant see anything obviously broken. Is there something that prevents the gears on the agitator shaft from rising too high and missing the other larger gear or something that grips to the agitator shaft that could be slipping?

See if you can put the transmission back together correctly, making sure you have enough fluid in it and then check the agitator dogs. They probably need replacing.
