Model Number: MAH5500BWW Brand: Maytag Age: More than 10 years
I've got a Maytag Neptune washer that only works on the "hand wash" cycle. We get no response when we press the other buttons - no LCD display.
We had a power outage for about 3.5 hours but the washer was off. The next morning when we tried to wash clothes, only the one cycle was available. We unplugged the washer for about 30 seconds, plugged it back in, but no change. We unplugged it for 5 minutes and we were able to wash as normal with the other cycles available. Two days later, the same thing but having to go through the unplug and wait routine many more times. Now it only works on the "hand wash" cycle. Do we need a new main circuit board? Not sure if the power outage is just a coincidence for another failure or if a surge damaged the board. The door switch seems to work - shows a display when open. Anything else that might be causing this? Thanks very much! Gary Ads By Google Related Models |

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for Maytag MAH5500BWW WASHER- HORIZONTAL AXIS | AppliancePartsPros.com Here is a service manual. http://appliancejunk.com/forums/inde...t=1335 266805 Try running the diagnostics It does sound like a control board problem. Page 4-4 of the last manual in the set gives the keypad output. Since other keys that also use the same pin outputs as the hand wash do not work I doubt it is a keypad problem.

Thanks denman for the reply.
When I go to the website you've shown for the service manual, I go to a new forum site that I have to register for and then it automatically sends me to the ************************.com website. However, there are no service manuals available. Are you sure your website is correct? Is this service manual available as an online reference or do I have to buy it first? I'd like to run the diagnostics before ordering a new board. Thanks very much. Gary |

My browser takes me there.
The manual should be free. Not sure what the problem is. Try this. Go to the site and register. Then go back and log in. Leave that page open. Now try my link in a new page/tab. If that does not work then after logging in go to the site. the manual is in Service Manuals \ Free Downloads \ Washer Service Repair Manuals \ Page 4 \ 16010061 (last item on the page)

Hi Denman;
I talked with you last week about a Maytag Neptune washer that only worked on the hand wash cycle. We installed a new control unit last Friday and it seemed to work OK although when we first installed it, it still displayed the hand wash only cycle light and then seemed to work OK on the other cycles. Today, it went back to working only on the hand wash cycle. Any ideas on what could be wrong with it? Frankly, the service manual is very confusing and we couldn't find the code info on the pages you mentioned. Any help would be appreciated. Gary |

You said "it seemed to work OK". Did it run normal or did it run the cycle and still have weird things happening. The only other thing I can think of is that it is a keypad problem. Perhaps is the "hand wash" key is always closed it locks out the other keys but I am just guessing here. Frankly, the service manual is very confusing and we couldn't find the code info on the pages you mentioned. Yes they just cover too many unit types. Yours is the third manual in the set (Supplement five) and even then they also cover yours and a LCD unit. Page 2-12 of that manual does show that the "hand wash" key is used as an input key during diagnostics so perhaps the unit is being forced into diagnostics. Page 4-4 of the manual gives the outputs for the keypad. Other than swapping it out this may be the only way to check it to ensure that each key is open and then closes when pressed. Diagnostics starts on Page 2-11 The unit logs error/help codes so maybe it is logging in codes and when the log is full locks the unit up, again just a guess. Try getting into the diagnostics. Unplug the unit for a few minutes and try it again. Now does it run OK for a few cycles? Perhaps it would be helpful to start a new post. Put in the problem and what you have done so far. You may get a reply from someone who has actually seen this problem or has more knowledge than I have.

Denman;
Thanks for the extensive list of ideas. I kept trying to get into the diagnostics and it wouldn't do it because it wouldn't go into the Service Mode (press delicates & heavy soil for 3 sec). All I kept getting was the minutes of the cycle - '63. And when I pressed presoak, it just added to the minutes - '78. I played with unplug and plug-in but no change - no access to service mode. Each time though when I plugged it back in, the hand wash light and a few others were on and no way to change. I unplugged the machine again and went and read more from section 2 and decided to do the membrane pad check. Again, no luck with getting into the service mode, but I just started pressing all the different keys and suddenly I was able to turn on the cotton/sturdy, wrinkle free, delicates cycle button (wouldn't come on before). I turned the machine off and tried it again, seemed OK. Did it again, this time pressing the hand wash and then pressing others - all OK! Not sure what happened but it may be as you say, the keypad sticking but we'll use it for now. My guess is we'll need a new keypad sometime in the future. Thanks for all the tips. If you think I should do anything else, please let me know. Gary |
