I am going to be working on a Maytag top load washer that definitely has a bad tub seal (it leaks).

Before I replaced this seal I wanted to be sure it had a good transmission. It has the orbital type transmission. A long time ago I was taught by someone at an appliance company that if you could hold on to the transmission while it was trying to go into a spin, (and stop it from turning) that this meant that the transmission was bad. Is this true, I can't find any websites that verify this.
