We have a top loading Whirlpool washer. Under the lid is a metal stamp that has model # LXR7244JQO. Last week it shook violently during the spin cycle. Yesterday it started making a loud grinding noise during the spin cycle.

It acts like it is trying to spin. It labors very slowly and kindof jerky. I tricked the switch and it starts to make the grinding noise (in the spin cycle) even before the tub starts to move.

Do you have any idea what is wrong?

Difficult to tell without being there to listen to the area where the noise originates and the type of noise.

I would remove the cabinet and try to determine if something is caught between the tub and the basket.

If not, your brakes may be the problem. This machine has brakes which keep the machine from spinning during the agitation cycle, and they release so the machine can spin. This could be your problem.

If you decide to replace the whole assembly, here is the part.

Hello,
Thank you so much for responding. My son has the gearbox and motor removed. While the washer was laying down on its back, he hand spun the drum. It went freely in one direction. Now it is sitting upright and it does not spin easily in either direction.

What could it be?

Withthe gear assembly back in and see if he can turn the transmission in either directions using the coupling on the gear shaft.

From what you have said I think the original diagnosis is most likely, a problem with the brakes and if the gear assembly is ok I would replace the brake tube using the part I cited earlier.

OK, thank you so much. I seen the price of that part is $108. We bought this washer used 2 weeks ago for 40.00. I think I am just going to throw it out and buy a new used washer for 60.00. Hopefully something like this will not happen again. If it does, I will post.

Well, sorry that did not work out for you, but sounds like a good decision.

In our area a really good, like new used machine will sell for $100 to $150, so unless you know the details on the machine you might want to spend a little more and be more certain.

My only strong recommendation is to make certain you buy a top loader WITHOUT any microprocessor controls.
