I really don't know how old this machine is. The plastic tub has a crack in the bottom. Can this be repaired successfully with silicon and how do I get the tub out so I can put in new grease?

I am not a fan of what you want to do, I really think you will be happier with a new machine.
This is a basic Whirlpool made direct drive washer. In our area you can replace it for about $300-$325, even less if you can find one on sale.

If the crack is easy to get at, you might re-post as a tub crack and ask for Gene, he has used an epoxy that works good.
