I managed to stretch the wire/spring assembly that wraps around the rubber boot on the door, so need to replace it. In the meantime, is it safe to run the washer without the wire/spring on the boot? No desire to clean up a big, wet mess.

I would not operate the machine without this as water may leak onto electric parts and cause all sorts of problems.
