My problem started with what I thought was a fire, but it turned out to be the spin belt burnt up. I replaced the belt and thought that would be it, no chance, not that simple.
When I started things up I noticed that the timer didn't seem to be indexing. Water fills automatically but to get it to agitate I have to manually turn the timer dial. Even turning the timer dial I can't get it to spin. It also noticed that my new belt is starting to smoke and smell. It must be by not going through a normal cycle the belt just sits there and spins. Thats probably what happened to the original belt.
So do you think it is the timer or is the transmission not performing? Is there anyway to test the timer before spending a hundred dollars on a new timer? Maybe its time for a new washer.. Thanx for any help! Tom

You can take off the front and observe the machine in agitate and spin mode, but what I think you will find is that the transmission pulley is not turning, or turning very slowly.
This would imply transmission problems, and given the age of your machine I think a replacement washer will be in order.
