when the washing machine is agitating it squeaks. does any one know why?

Open the lid and observe the agitation. Does the spinner basket tend to turn slightly in the opposite direction of the agitator? If so, the brake needs to be replaced. Eventually, it'll start to tear your clothes as it gets worse, so torn clothes is also a telltale symptom.

check your brake rotor and the brake lining looks like you need a new brake.

Pull off the front panel, usually release clips holding the top down, just push in a putty knife between the top and front panel. Check for water leaking from the tub, this water may be leaking on the brake housing causing the squeek. It will take some disasembly to look at the brake shoe.
