MAYTAG TOP LOAD CLOTHES WASHER MAVT546EWW (APPROXIMATELY 5 YEARS OLD) STOPS WASHING WITH "Motor Thermal protector opened" ERROR.

CONTROL PANEL LIGHTS STAY ON, BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. SOMETIMES THERE IS 'BURNED' SMELL.

  • LID SWITCH IS OK.
  • MANUALLY SELECTING 'RINSE AND SPIN' OR 'SPIN ONLY' DOES NOT WORK.
  • BELT LOOKS OK.
  • PULLEY TURNS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.

  • TUB CAN BE TURNED BY HAND.

AFTER WASHER IS OFF FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES, IT WILL RESUME WASHING AND COMPLETE CYCLES.

ANY GUIDANCE /ADVICE ON HOW TO FIX THIS WILL BE APPRECIATED.

THANKS,
DONNAMARIA

Probably need a new motor. If you know how and are able to safely test voltage, test for voltage at motor when it stops running. If you have voltage at motor, then it is most likely the motor, if no voltage then something else is causing the issue.

They sell motors on this site if it is the motor.
