Hi a few weeks ago my washer starts a slow leak. Then yesterday we came home to find the garage smoke logged. I guess from the washing inside that it wrapped around the agitator and burnt the motor out. But it may just be the water from the leak shorted out the motor/pump. How fixable are these machines to the layman. I've fixed many things before including driers. Are specialist tools required?:(

Hi Pavel,
These machines are pretty fixable and while I cannot guage your skills, if you have fooled around with dryers you should be able to change out the motor in your machine with no problem.
However, having said that I strongly urge you to replace the machine. Once you have had the "smoke" experience I think you should err on the side of caution. There may be several electrical things now wrong with your machine and you may spend a huge amount of time and money trying to find and fix all of them. More importantly, your machine may be a sitting electrical fire time bomb, and the money you save by fixing it is not worth the risk you take that a future fire could happen.
Sorry this happened, but take the money you would spend on parts and apply it to a good, basic, no-frills top loading washer.
Well, that's my opinion and I am sticking to it.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.
