Our kenmore washer loads on the wash cycle, but does nothing from that point on. I had to advance it to the spin cycle to empty the water. please advise

Check out the motor coupling, this video will show you how. Just don't take off the pump (unless you want a lot of water on the floor), tie it off to the leff.
