Just bought a used washer today. Owner said it worked great. Naturally I didn't check it since it looked new and owner had nice home. Got it home, hooked it up and turned it on. It filled with water, but that is all. No agitate, spin, or even drain. Can't feel or hear motor at all. The temp and level controls work and the on/off switch works to stop or start the filling. It is getting AC power. Is there an internal fuse or breaker or relay for the motor? I'm guessing the motor is dead. It looks new and doesn't smell and the tub turns fine. The agitator seems a bit loose. .I thought about checking the voltage to the motor, but is has a number of different color wires going to a connector mounted on it. help!

Most probable problem is a bad/burnt overload you can see on the motor windings,( a white plastic disk), or just a bad connection on the centrifical switch mounted on the motor, just check.

It is a top load machine. I looked all over for a lid switch but can see none. The symptoms would be the same. The wiring diagram shows a lid switch, but it sure isn't visible. Is it possible that one of the hinges that runs horizontally into the case actuates it?

I don't think the timer advances. If I advance it manually, it only works to fill the washer - nothing else.

Your lid switch is behind the control panel, just remove the panel screws, tilt panel back, and short out the lid switch to see if it will work.
It is rare a timer will totally fail in this way, but if your lid switch is ok, take the cover off the timer and see if you see burnt contacts, if so, order a timer AP3175368. Remember, if you plug in the new timer, and it does'nt solve your problem, you can't send it back for a refund.

after it take water timer does advance by itself and it is also making ticking noise? you do not have a problem with lid switch at all,if you had a problem with lid switch it should atleast agitate it but not spinning
