when washer starts the wash cycle the agitator grinds ,looks like its shaking and very noisey,but it spins fine .what's could be the problem and is it worth the fix?

Hi Looz

Noises are very difficult for us to diagnose because, well, because we are not there to listen.

Let's see if you can narrow it down. Remove the front panel (release clips by inserting a screw driver or putty knife in the gap between the front and top near the edges) and operate it with the front off. You should be able to get a better determination of where the noise is.

Let us know what you find out.

sounds like it's coming from the transmission ....sounds like the gears are grinding

I was afraid that was the case, it was very likely the transmission. (I was hoping something stuck on belt pulley, or in the tub/basket area.

Given the age of your machine I think a new or good used machine is in order.
