New GE Washer has slow spin
Our GE washer has a slow spin. The water pumps out fine, but just spins slowly. I have verified there is nothing obstructing the basket. The basket spins freely with the washer off. I've removed the front cover and I can't find anything that looks wrong. No burning belts or obvious problems. I think this may have a 2 speed motor and I suspect that it's trying to spin on the slower spin.
Anybody have any ideas? |
Hi Steve
Difficult to diagnose. See if there is a tech sheet in the console or behind the tub. The timer is a possibility, and it is not too expensive so you could try to replace it on spec. Good luck, let us know if you find the tech sheet and if that helps. |
The motor has built-in self-diagnostic system that stores error codes. If some code appear it will limit the motor to a slow rpm. This page will explain more about the codes http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/GE-washer-repair.html.
If your washer has an error code I recommend clearing it as described on that page and if it ever reappears replace the part suggested. |
Problem Fixed - at least for now
Thanks to both of these suggestions.
I found the tech bullentin behind the control panel. Useful information, but similar to that found on this website. I read the code. It was a code 9 (9 flashes) indicating that the motor brake failed. The fix for this is to replace the motor. At a cost of more than $200, it didn't seem reasonable to do. Then I noticed the comment about resetting the code. I tried this and it worked. The washer now works, at least for now. Hopefully, it will keep on working. Thanks for your help. |
