Washer was 10 years old last August and last night started making a loud noise during wash and spin cycles. The noise is hard to describe but is kind of a fast rattle. The volume of the noise goes up and down varying from very loud to barely audible. In spite of this the washer seems to be functioning properly without any unusual vibration. For as long as I can remember, the washer has made a loud screeching noise when it stops (normal braking??). Thanks very much for any recommendations you can make!

Could be the bearing in the water pump making the noise. Quote:For as long as I can remember, the washer has made a loud screeching noise when it stops (normal braking??). Common problem, but I would not call it normal. I replace a lot of noisy breaks.

I lifted the washer, turned it on spin and noticed some wobbling on the motor shaft. I guess it could be a bearing or a pulley issue, neither of which seem easy to confirm. I'm wondering if a fix is worth pursuing.
