spin cycle works, but makes noise then goes away

All functions work normally, but when the spin cycle starts a metallic noise is made. As the drum picks up speed the noise goes away. It stops and pumps ok. I removed the cabinet and bypassed the lid switch and listened for the noise. It is either coming from the clutch area or transmission area, but is hard to tell. Clutch felt warm after several times trying to diagnose (but I think that is normal). Any other ideas and how can i tell if clutch is bad if I remove it?
Thanks in advance,
Marty
ps this is a direct drive machine.

I hope to open it up and look at the motor coupling today. I didn't notice the noise in the perm press cycle.
