I have a GE washer which will not agitate. The motor sounds fine. It fills and spins and empties properly. I took off the agitator and the air bell housing and am down to the transmission shaft and 6 sided nut. How do I know if the air bell housing is stripped? It looks OK as far as I can tell but I have no clue! Should I go any further in removing anything. HELP! I don't have the $150 or $200 to pay a repairman if I can do it myself.

If the agitator coupling (air bell) is stripped out it will spin freely on the transmission shaft. Also you can look in the coupling to see if the teeth are stripped. Washer Agitator Repair Guide

I did check the bell housing and it fits on the shaft perfectly and does not spin on it. Duh, you think I could have figured that out!. I TRIED TO TURN THE BELL HOUSING WHILE ON THE SHAFT(THE WASHER IS UNPLUGGED), IS THE SHAFT SUPPOSED TO TURN WHILE THE HOUSING IS ON? Should I untighten the 6 sided nut under the housing. The nut is snugged onto the shaft. Can I get to another part from there or do I have another problem? Thanks much.

No, the transmission shaft should not move when you turn the agitator coupling. If you get any movement I would say the coupling is slipping. I don’t think you need to remove that nut because I think your problem is elsewhere.

If I understand you correctly you can hear the motor running during wash but the agitator will not move but it spins fine. You have already ruled out the agitator coupling so here are some other things to try.

The agitator coupling and the agitator have groves that look into each other. Make sure they are not stripped out.

If they are not bad remove the front and watch the motor during wash. The motor should spin the clutch, the belt and the transmission pulley. Because it will spin fine I don’t think the belt or the clutch are bad so if there is any slippage on the belt or clutch check the transmission. See if the big pulley on the bottom of the transmission will turn freely both ways. One way the whole transmission will turn ant the other way the agitator will turn. If it is locked up either way the transmission is bad.
