My Maytag washer will not agitate. It fills and spins drys ok. Belts smell as in burning. Replaced belts with no difference. Pulley is not loose.

Maytag top loader model # MAT10PDAAW

Thanks

I don't work on coin operated models, but in general it sounds like your problem is in the transmission. See if you can observe operating with the front off and if the motor is trying to turn but the pulley will not then that suggests a tranny problem.

I have a 12 - 14 year old GE Top Loader (WJXR2080T2WN) and it's doing the same thing. Fills with water, and when it's full and should start the agitation all I hear is a hum from the timer in the top panel. No matter what water level, speed (it's a 2-speed) or cycle type (normal, delicate, etc), it never starts the agitation at the beginning of the cycle. However, if I move the timer to after the end of wash - Spin - it will empty the water and spin. (I replaced the timer just two years ago with a new GE OEM part).

Here's the weird part, I fulled the front cover and whacked the motor (where the magnet plates are exposed) with a hammer and the damn thing started the agitation. Turned it off and then back on and nothing. Whacked it again and it started again. We finished two clothes loads with it working fine on it's own. But I'm betting that was a warning of the problems to come back.

So, I'd like to fix it (or replace the washer - it is at least 12 years old), if I can determine where the problem is!? The Motor, The Clutch, or as I actually DOUBT the Transmission; since I whacked the motor, not the Trans, so how could that clue be the Trans?? More likely the Clutch???

Hope you get a better clue from these details. - Thanks

I think your motor is in the process of failing, and a new machine is probably in order.

Yea, I suspect that was the case, impending motor failure or the clutch. Either way, after looking at motor prices and clutch prices from various sites being nearly half the cost of a new TL washer even if I did the labor; anyone would be nuts to repair it (10 - 12 years old).

Further concern is looking at all the complaints on this forum board for recent model US made Washers! (very few complaints for Korean and Japanese made ones though). What's a family supposed to buy!? :(

We bought a US made Fidgidaire dish washer that had 3 service calls in the first 2 months and needed a complete motor/ pump assembly replacement!
