I found similar posts but not on point. I was washing a pillow (never any problem before) and think the machine got out of balance. I heard a low pitched squeal and a burning rubbery smell (like a belt stuck). The machine had stopped at the rinse cycle and the wash drum was stuck. I turned the machine off, and let it rest. I moved the wash drum by hand, turned the machine on and completed the rinse cycle.
The next time I used it was about a week later to wash a comforter. No out of balance issues. Faint burning smell but not as bad as before. It stopped at the rinse cycle.
Any advice on how to fix the machine, or is it time for a replacement? I know Maytags aren't what they used to be, but it seems like you should get more than 12 years out of a machine.

The belt may need to be replaced.
