Two washes after replacing the bearings and shell a thumping noise started. On checking there is no radial play in the bearings, but there is about 1/8" axial play. What is wrong and what can be done.

My wife will kill me if I don't get this washer fixed soon!! I have taken the pulley off (still in the machine) and checked the source of the axial play. The shaft from the tub ends in a rectangular piece which fits into the pulley which is bolted on. The pulley however does not seat on the inner race of the outer bearing resulting in the axial play of about 1/8 inch as the whole shaft tub and all move in and out.
IS THIS NORMAL -it makes a clunking noise when spinning.
Is there a shim missing, or is the replacement shell and bearing I fitte not correct for my machine (It came from GE!)
THANKS THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!
